Growing Living Stones
From a small meal ministry founded by seven Christian friends answering God’s call to “feed the hungry” has grown a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with more than 150 volunteers, now providing not only meals, fellowship, encouragement, and prayer, but also programs designed to meet other challenges facing our neighbors in their often-uncertain lives.
Since our inception in 2012, we have served more than 30,000 meals, without charge or discrimination, to men, women, and children in seven different South Hills locations. We have never missed serving a meal, even during the pandemic when we were forced to serve cold food out of the backs of volunteers’ vehicles.
In 2019, based on God’s prompting and information gathered largely through deepening relationships with our neighbors, we made the decision to grow Living Stones so that we could offer additional help. Today, we are providing more meals to more people in more communities and have developed and implemented programs and services that target more of our neighbors’ needs, benefit the community, and are not offered by other nearby Christian organizations. No one in our history has ever been turned away, and every meal is free. Those we serve range in age and circumstance. We serve some of the most vulnerable among us. Many return each week, not just for the food, but also for the camaraderie and conversation with friends they have made during meals together, and for the support they receive that has become so important in their lives. Some come briefly, just long enough to overcome the challenges that disrupted their lives, meaning they no longer need the help we provide. We miss them but are grateful they no longer need our help.
